Hello my fellow human Beings:
We are coming to the end of March this week. This calendar marker is a good opportunity to pause and take stock of our progress on the path to achieving our goals. Whether we set goals for the new year (new year’s resolutions) or Lenten practices and promises, the end of March (the end of the first quarter of the year) is a good time to review, reassess and recommit to the goals that are important to us.
First, take time to be still and breathe.
- This practice helps us to be more grounded and aware. It helps us to clear the emotional and mental unnecessary noise (e.g. anxiety, despair, worry, self-doubt) that can come up when we set out on a progress checking exercise. It aids us into the right mindframe to perform the next step as objectively as possible.
Second, REVIEW your goals and what you have accomplished so far.
- Remember those S.M.A.R.T. goals you created. Review each goal and evaluate how far (or not so far) you have progressed towards achieving it. Applaud yourself for the positive advances you have made, regardless of how small they may be. If you are moving forward towards your goals, rather than regressing or standing still, then you are improving and that is good.
Be reminded of what Chinese philosopher, Lao-tzu said:
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Third, REASSESS the goals you need to prioritize.
- Now that you know which goals you are implementing well and which you need to put more work and effort into achieving, you can reassess your priorities and actions. Consider whether the goals you are lagging on are still objectives you wish to achieve. If yes, then rethink ways that you can take steps towards attaining those goals. What was holding you back in the past? What might you do differently to help you move forward in the future? Remember, even small actions (baby steps) pointed in the right direction, will help you advance towards your targets.
Finally, RECOMMIT to those goals which are important to you.
- If you know that a goal (e.g. achieving more inner peace through regular connection with your True Self via meditation) is a crucial aim for you, then make a strong determination to recommit yourself to this laudable purpose. Don’t get discouraged. Life has its ups and downs. Some days are better than others. Just remember that with each new day you have the opportunitry to start again, to recommit, to take the next step on the path.
In The Path to Enlightenment, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said:
“Spiritual practice is difficult in the beginning. You wonder how on earth you can ever do it. But as you get used to it, the practice gradually becomes easier. Do not be too stubborn or push yourself too hard. If you practice in accord with your individual capacity, little by little you will find more pleasure and joy in it. As you gain inner strength, your positive actions will gain in profundity and scope.”
So find the time to be still and breathe, REVIEW, REASSESS and RECOMMIT to taking little steps towards progressing on your path and you will live more abundantly!
