In reflecting on what inspiration to use to at the beginning of this endeavour, I turned to my first wise teacher in my life, my mother.
We all go through life where we don’t want to accept the teachings of our parents at some time or the other. We think that they can’t possibly know what is best for us, or what they are saying or doing hurts us, so we choose not listen to them. Then after time has passed, which could be many, many years, we find something that they gave us – in a card, a note or an inscription in a book – and we remember the love and wisdom they wanted to share with us in the best way they knew how.
I went through that process recently and came across this inscription in a book from my mother. She told me this is the motto that she lives by, and in truth, it is the motto that I strive to live by as well, and so I generously share it with you.
“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good thing therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”
Thank you, Mom, for teaching me the gift of kindness.
Until next time, may you all be still, be kind and live more abundantly!
